Book Review: My Family and Other Animals, by Gerald Durrell

A lovely summer read, depicting an eccentric English family who moved out to Corfu in the 1930’s, told through the eyes of a ten-year-old boy. Nature lovers will particularly enjoy it, but the humorous anecdotes of family life are very entertaining and suitable for both girls and boys.

This book is excellent for children thinking of taking the 11 Plus; full of wonderful figurative language, and lots of challenging vocabulary. Although this is a challenging book the content is suitable for upper primary school children. Be warned though, there are a few mild swear words, so use your discretion if that’s important to you.
